The EK Holden was a favorite for Taxis and Police cars. The Standard versions of the EK Holden were offered in single colours. The Special versions of the EK Holden were offered in two tone. The colours were a combination of either grey, pink, blue or aqua and white. The colours were pastels and highlighted with chrome and white wall tyres.

The EK Holden was launched in May 1961. Designed as a family picnic and camping car the EK Holden was based on the 57 Chevrolet and was Holden’s first station wagon. The likeness of the EK Holden to the 57 Chevrolet resulted in the title ‘The Poor mans Chev". Evidence of the likeness to the 57 Chevrolet can be seen in the rear fins and abundance of chrome. Alas, the EK Holden was also the last Holden to sport the rear fins. Later models, including the EH Holden had more of a boxed rear end.
New to the EK Holden was the dashboard, wrap-around windscreen and authentic dog-leg windscreen pillars. The EK Holden was the first Holden to offer Hydramatic as an option on Special models. The EK Holden also three on the tree column shift and bench seats. The EK Holden was also a first in it’s offering of automatic or manual transmission.

Holden sold 150 214 EK Holdens. There were several variants of the EK Holden. They included the EK Holden Standard sedan, EK Holden Special sedan, EK Holden Standard station wagon, EK Holden Special station wagon, EK Holden Panel van and the EK Holden Ute.
